St. Francis Butterfly
27'' x 32'' or 69cm x 81cm
The Butterfly is a symbol of transformation across many cultures around the world. I love using the butterfly as a metaphor, to explore the transcendent quality I believe is present in us all. Like the butterfly lava that has to die in order to morph and resurrect into a new state to become the butterfly. It reminds me to have faith in the process of change.
This butterfly has the face of St. Francis on the wings
A copper frame starts the shape.
Raw silk is printed with hand drawn sketches and formed over sculpted clay.
The finishing touches are added in the form of painted details & embellishments.
It is a layered refined & intricate process developed by Martin and is unique to these sculptures.
